The Film 'Together' Is Now Streaming, and It Has the Power to Test Your Partnership.

Consider this a test for partners in committed relationships who enjoy scary movies: Settle in with your loved one and view Together. This independent film success of 2025 has now made its streaming debut via Hulu. Outwardly, it might appear like standard biological terror, but within Together lies a intense examination about the ways we decide to love our partners.

An Introductory Film Investigating Relationship Dynamics

Together represents the introductory feature for director Michael Shanks. It features the real-life married couple Dave Franco and Alison Brie as Millie and Tim, an unmarried couple that have been together for a decade. Married in actuality in 2017, the actors contribute a special spark to their roles, masterfully depicting both the joys and frustrations of a long-term relationship.

The story begins when the couple relocate from the metropolis to the rural area for Millie’s job. A familiar story element, admittedly, but that’s mostly where the conventions conclude. Together becomes as much a psychological exploration of the couple's dynamic as it is a film about physical terror.

A Paranormal Spark

While hiking near their rural residence, a tempest descends, and the two fall into an hole in the earth. After spending the night there and managing to escape, a strange force begins influencing the pair. This force creates a otherworldly bond between them that goes well past emotional intimacy.

The entire film is a slow burn of scares, blending moments of dreamlike terrors, gross (but never too gross) biological grotesqueries, and surprisingly comedic dialogue (sometimes in the middle of something disturbing). The director skillfully blends these components seamlessly and presents them in a slowly mounting aura of dread.

Nuanced Portrayals

A significant portion of Together is exclusively the two lead actors, and they masterfully render countless layers to the dynamic between Tim and Millie. Her self-assurance and emotional bond is waning due to a distance. Her unspoken irritation of Tim for his reluctance to pursue anything but his floundering music career inexorably rises.

Tim, on the other hand senses confinement and isolated by Millie, who’s the impetus they’ve moved to the country and removed from his network of friends. He is terrified of the idea of totally forfeiting his sense of self in Millie. This fear is amplified by the circumstance he can’t drive and is dependent on Millie for getting around.

Shanks’ smartest move is that he avoids making Tim or Millie the obvious villain.

Both characters confront the kind of problems that come with long-term unions after ten years. Deep down, they have affection for one another. They share moments of joy, offer support, and share intimately at times. But under the surface, there’s an inescapable feeling of questioning about their future together.

Symbolism and Metaphor

While the supernatural forces in Together act as a metaphor for these fears of codependency and totally devoting oneself to another person, the symbolism does not come across as overly obvious or heavy-handed. Instead, these ickier, creepier moments present a perfect parallel to the interpersonal storytelling. Both the supernatural and the personal serve the other symbiotically.

A Divisive Ending

Together’s final act, which remains unspoiled, has left audiences divided on the story's concluding statement about unhealthy partnerships. It has been said that those not in relationships have seen the movie as a strong argument for staying single. Meanwhile, some couples having disagreements found that the film ended up guiding them to reconcile.

If you are alone or with a partner, your own response could function as a revealing measure of how you think about commitment. Will the ending sow anxiety and horror, or a positive outlook on love? Will you see yourself in either protagonist and feel frustration, or simply glance toward your other half and utter, “I’d do that for you”?

No matter your reaction, Together is an test you can embark on today.

Together is streaming on the streaming service Hulu at present.
