"Do you know when you'll be speaking to the band?" a text pops up. "My request was to ask if I can become their extra sister."

There's just a key snag: The sender also wants to be Haim's fourth member. Furthermore, we are in plentiful company. Multiple famous fans have publicly begged for the position.

One thing is obvious an irresistible appeal is happening. The siblings Este, Danielle and Alana began their musical journey doing sets at small eateries with their parents. Presently, they stand as repeated Grammy hopefuls.

Like all the most iconic groups, they're a close unit. Their visuals frequently feature them striding in unison down the avenues of Los Angeles. On stage, they play with such unfettered exuberance you find yourself thinking, "I wish to be a piece of that, too."

"The numerous instances on tour that young girls came up to us and said, 'After your show, I picked up a bass'," states Alana, the youngest of the sisters. "It is the greatest compliment. That is recognition in itself. We've done our job if we can encourage young girls to form a group."

"So all is invited to be the next Haim sister."

Historic Milestone

The group have called into home, where they're taking a pause after an extensive tour in for their new album, I Quit.

They're right now celebrating the news it's been shortlisted for a top rock honor at the Grammy Awards – with Haim the very first all-female band ever in consideration for the trophy.

"I tune into the lists every year, so it almost feels like an out-of-body experience when your name is announced," says Alana. "I immediately called my sisters to say, 'Am I hearing this right or am I hallucinating'?"

The significance of the accolade resonates with the band.

"We deliberately set out to make a guitar-driven album this time, so it's a major step," adds Alana. "Yet we're just thankful for the pioneers that paved the way."

Personal Turmoil and Candor

The record came out of a period of personal change. All three sisters ended up single, and the music explores that unique in-between place where you're happy to be free, but not quite ready to start anew.

The lyrics track endings and goodbyes. The sisters seek love, but not the kind of love they've had. You can hear them figuring out in real time who they are becoming.

"That's a perfect way of putting it, yes," responds Danielle. "I Quit is like a slogan. You have to consciously practice blocking the criticism and saying, 'I couldn't care less what people think'."

Refinement of Sound

That newfound toughness called for a fresh approach – more unpolished and powerful than anything the band had done before.

For Danielle, who helped produce the album, that started with the drum sound.

"Percussion is such a specific thing, and I focus so intensely about it," she emphasizes.

"'Journey of the drum sound' will be the title of our biography," jokes Alana. "I always say, our albums won't commence until we find the right drum sound."

Stories and Shared Humor

The trio's openness shaped the album's marketing, where the sisters revealed some of their personal tales.

One man ended things with Este over a medical concern. Alana recalled a story of flying to celebrate New Year's Eve with someone, only to receive a high five at midnight.

"Experiencing these heartbreaks, you just feel like there's only darkness," says Alana. "So to be able to find humor in those stories and hear others tell you even crazier stories, it's so amazing."

A Secure Future

You can clearly sense a shift in the band. Today, Haim are more certain of their standing in the rock pantheon.

They're major draws, with successful albums and an international following.

However the band will consistently be their number one focus.

"My sisters and I have been making music since I was four," says Alana. "It's like nothing else that we were destined for. And I'm really grateful we've gotten here and we're still going strong."
